REWARDS: Williams blossomed in his third pro season, amassing 82 receptions for 1,310 yards and seven touchdowns in 2006. Williams set career highs in receptions, yards and yards per reception (16.0) last season in offensive coordinator Mike Martz’s pass-happy scheme. Williams has recorded seven or more touchdowns per season so far in his career. Blessed with good size and great leaping ability, Williams has the makings of becoming an exceptional red zone target.
RISKS: At times, Williams will drive you crazy with his lack of concentration. He has had difficulty staying healthy for an entire season, although he did manage to stay on the field for all 16 games in 2006. He has been nursing a mild hamstring injury during the offseason, however, which is worth keeping an eye on. The addition of receiver Calvin Johnson in the draft can only help the Lions’ offense, but will Williams’ production suffer as a result?
BOTTOM LINE: Williams is just at the age where he is ready to emerge into a bona fide No. 1 starter. He also plays in a fantasy-friendly offense under Martz. As long as he can stay healthy and doesn’t lose too many balls to Johnson, Williams should make fantasy owners very happy.
