Drummond’s Days in Detroit Coming to an End?

One player that appears to be headed for the chopping block in Detroit is solid kickDrummond returner Eddie Drummond.  The Detroit News’ Rob Parker recently wrote that Drummond, who has caught just one pass the last two preseason games, is not clear on his role on the team as the regular season approaches.  “I’m a little confused on what’s going on,” Drummond said. “But I think it’s the same thing with the Lions as far as me. They are kind of confused on how they want to use me this year, what’s going on.”  One reason that Drummond’s Lions career is in doubt is the signing of Shaun McDonald, whose specality is to return kicks, the task that Drummon has had in the past.  “I look for any opportunity I get,” said McDonald. “I know Eddie Drummond is a great return man. But whenever I get an opportunity to get back there, I’m going to try to make some plays.”  McDonald came to the Lions from the Rams this past offseason.

Drummond made the Pro Bowl as a kick returner just a few years back in 2004, and knows that he also can help as a solid coverman on special teams.  “I know I’m the best person for the returning job and special teams and things like that,” he said. “It’s just if I fit into their schemes or not.”  While he is keeping his head held high about his future in Detroit, one would have to think that come cut down day, Drummond could be on the outside looking in.
