Positives Abound for Lions in Win over Cleveland

Sims takes off with a pick

You have to have some positive thoughts about the Lions after watching their 23-20 win over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday night in Cleveland. Despite it being only the preseason, the Lions look a lot sharper, a lot more crisp, and are already playing what what seems to be a lot more determination that at any point of the dreadful 2006 season. QB Jon Kitna seems to be intersted in getting everyone in the offense involved, and the defense has stepped up in the last two weeks vs Cincy and now Cleveland and made some plays.

Saturday night they started fast, forcing a fumble on the games first play, and quickly racing out to a 23-0 lead before Browns rookie QB Brady Quinn made it interesting in the end with two late TD’s. The Lions #1 defense dominated the Browns #1 offesne, forcing two turnovers and not allowing a single point. They forced a big mistake by the Browns and got a pick near the goal line that eventually led to a Lions field goal.

Kitna looked strong, going 12-of-16 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown. A 14-yard throw to Shaun McDonald with 31 seconds left in the half gave the Lions a 13-0 lead. Rookie Kenny Byrd’s 26-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half made it 16-0. The rushing game was led by Tatum Bell with 33 yards. T.J. Duckett was next with 31. There is nothing at least on Saturday night to point that the Lions can’t do this in the regular season.

For now, all looks good for a team that did not have a lot to cheer about in 2006, and has not overall had much to cheer about in the past few seasons. Sure there is a lot that can go wrong between now and the start of the regular season, but just two wins over two Ohio teams is enough to give the Lions some hope for what could be a much better 2007.
