Nick HarrisAccording to ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli, Detroit Lions punter Nick Harris, who has improved statistically every season since he was acquired by the Lions in 2004, has received a five-year extension on his current contract which should allow the Lions to retain his services until the 2012 season.  The deal is worth $8.55 million during the duration of the contract.

Harris was originally drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2001; he was released by the Broncos as a rookie then picked up by the Cincinnati Bengals.  He spent 3 season with Cincinnati (2001-2003) until his release by the team.  I do not know if Lions general manager Matt Millen had anything to do with this transaction, but I’d have to say that it was a very good move on the Lions’ part.  Harris and kicker Jason Hanson are considered to be one of the NFL’s top kicking tandems.
