Cunningham Says Defesne Has to Play with Offense in Mind

From: Detroit Free Press

Gunther Cunningham made an interesting comment, considering the Lions’ recent history. “The defense has to be built to play with the offense, not as an opposite,” Cunningham said. “You can’t play zone defense if you’re going to be a volatile offense and throw the ball all over the field. You have to match up with that and maybe you have to blitz more and do all these things. I think all those things we’ll discuss here in the next month.” The Lions, of course, had exactly that mismatch the first two years under Marinelli. They used a zone defense, the Tampa Two, with Mike Martz’s high-flying passing attack.
