Lions Keeping Quiet About Possible Interest in Cutler

Bills Broncos Football

Mike O’Hara of The Detroit News reports the following:

The Lions’ brain trust hasn’t tipped its hand about the level of interest in Denver Broncos’ quarterback Jay Cutler, but the voice of the team says he’d make a deal for Cutler if he is available. Dan Miller, the Lions’ play-by-play man, said he thinks the Lions will make on move on Cutler if the Broncos try to deal him before the draft starts on April 25. “In my opinion, yes,” Miller said Thursday night on the NFL Network’s “Total Access” show.

“This is a team that needs a quarterback. When you look at where they are, Daunte Culpepper is the starter. Daunte Culpepper hasn’t played well since 2004. “If the call comes in, they would take it – or make it.” Miller’s comments have credibility because of the traditionally close relationship a play-by-play man has with an NFL franchise that often provides access to a team that is not shared with independent reporters in the print and electronic media. The Lions have the first pick overall. Most mock drafts have them taking Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford.

This year’s draft does not have a true superstar at any position, which makes it unlikely the Lions can trade down from the top pick – if they are so inclined. Trading the pick is not a strong possibility, Miller said. “If I were running a team, I’d be shopping that pick,” Miller said.
