Now that the Detroit Red Wing season is over, the Detroit Lions have moved up the ladder a bit in what is on the sports fan radar. The Detroit Tigers are now on the top rung, with the Lions next. Then you have the Detroit Shock where we just heard that Bill Laimbeer is stepping down.
But that’s it for the Shock for now. The Tigers are actually in first place by 3 games over Minnesota, but nobody really pays attention to the standings until after the Fourth of July. The Detroit Red Wings lost a tough series to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and they are to be congratulated. All except for Sidney Crosby since he didn’t bother showing up for the congratulations.
The Lions as a team have been quiet lately. No big hold outs, no big gripes about the new head coach (see Jay Cutler and Josh McDaniels), not much of anything. Coach Jim Schwartz was at Michigan International Speedway recently with none other than Kid Rock! When asked about the new coach, Kid said “he’s the best coach we’ve ever had in Detroit”. What’s his record Kid? Oh yeah, 0 – 0.
Matt Millen had a conference call with the media today and was asked about how he would handle any discussion about the Detroit Lions. “I’ll handle the Lions like I do any other football team. I’ll just look at them and break them down and see where they’re at. And here’s the thing with Detroit. I love Detroit. I’m a huge fan of Martin Mayhew. I’m a huge fan of Jim Schwartz.
I think that’s an excellent hire. I think Jim did a good job of putting his staff together. But there’s no bigger fan anywhere of Mr. Ford than me. And I would love to see him holding a trophy. That would be great for me — or for him, rather — but more importantly it’d be great for the fans of Detroit. Because the fans of Detroit, they deserve (it) — they’re awesome fans. So I’ll just handle Detroit like I would any other football team. But obviously having been there for 7.5 years they’re a big part of me.”
Millen had a lot more to say, so if you’re interested, you can check it out on the Lions Blog on The Detroit News website.
