Lions Ink First-Round Pick TE Pettigrew

First round draft pick and tight end Brandon Pettigrew has signed a five-year deal with the Lions. Pettigrew was the last of the Lions’ draft picks to agree to a contract. Now, none of the Lions’ rookies will have missed anything at training camp, which is a major accomplishment by the team.

Players were scheduled to check in between noon and 6 p.m. today and have their team meal tonight, and then their first team meeting and first practice are Saturday. Earlier today, Lions coach Jim Schwartz said that they were very close to a deal with Pettigrew.

“We are pretty optimistic,” Schwartz said. “Things are moving pretty quickly now.

“Usually at this time there’s just a few little things. Most terms have been agreed to. There’s a couple little things that might need to be ironed out, that we might be waiting on approval from the league saying it a certain way.

“But we’re optimistic we’ll have everybody checked in today.” The Lions have also released safety Antonio Smith and linebacker Spenser Smith.
