If the Lions decide to go with rookie Matthew Stafford, then they are admitting that this year is nothing but a 16 game exhibition season. I could see it if Detroit had a solid defense to hold the opponents, or a stud running back for Matt to hand off to, but they don’t have either, so naming Stafford as the starter like Tom Kowalski from M-Live is saying, then this is really making this a learning season for the whole team.

The Lions have improved their defense, mainly with the linebackers, and they do have a solid running back in Kevin Smith, but really, does anybody believe that this is more than a 4 win season? Stafford is the future, but do you really want to put him behind the offensive line that we have now?

I say, let Daunte Culpepper run around back there and wear out the defensive lineman. Then in the fourth quarter, when those lineman are exhausted, bring in Stafford for the rescue. Well maybe not rescue, but at least get some game experience, and see what he can do.

If Culpepper is horrible during the preseason, than you have no choice but to install Satfford. But lets see what happens. Culpepper could be the guy he was from back in 2005. He has Calvin Johnson to throw to, and although he is not as fast as Randy Moss once was, he can get open, and he can make people miss. Coaches, and even fans are saying that Culpepper looks good so far, so why not make it his position to lose?
