Tight Ends to Be More Targeted in 2010?

The Detroit News reports that the Lions may look to involve the TE’s more in their offense in 2010:

The Lions already had an all-purpose tight end in Pettigrew, last year’s first-round pick, as well as a more traditional blocker in Will Heller. Now they’ve added Tony Scheffler, an athletic, 6-foot-5 target who thrived in Mike Shanahan’s offense in Denver, catching 89 passes for 1,194 yards and eight touchdowns in 2007 and ’08. Ideally, he’ll fill a “move” tight end role, similar to what Dallas Clark does in Indianapolis. “It’s just moving around, creating mismatches – something we kind of got away from last year in Denver,” Scheffler said, noting the awkward – and contentious – coaching transition from Mike Shanahan to Josh McDaniels last season. “Coach Linehan is gonna find the guys that can win in situations and he’s going to get them in those situations.” Said Linehan: “You have to treat him like a wide receiver when you flex him out wide or even from a tight-end spot. We’re gonna be in two-tight end sets a lot, and that’s one reason why he’s here. It gives us that dimension. And I’m real excited about adding him because he changes the game. He’s a problem for the defense, he’s a guy that puts points on the scoreboard and he’s a great target for a great quarterback.”

  1. Don says:

I am all excited about Scheffler and Pettigrew, “IT is going to Open things up a lot.
and I know that Stafford is going to be able to hit his Marks a lot better and a lot more than he did Last year.
I know a lot of People are thinking that he had a hard time last year and he did. But, that is also why he didn’t connect as much as he will this year. He will have more time and he is even that much more used to this system.
I am wondering about the Other TE Dan Gronkowski?
Last year that dude was catching One Handed balls like 70 yards downfield or something like that.
and when he was with the Terrapins He was Hot in their System at the TE position also.
He was from the write up on him a good Pass catcher and Blocker. So, I am hoping that he steps up Because, to have another TE that is still young and good at the position is good to have him even if it is for back up.
