Lions Place Gosder Cherilus on IR

Tom Kowalski of MLive.com reports the Lions placed starting right tackle Gosder Cherlius on Injured Reserve losing him for the remainder of the season.  Cherilus was Matt Millen’s final first round pick and he’s had an up and down career.

Cherilus has the physical ability to be a Pro Bowl right tackle, but he’s been inconsistent and struggled with mental breakdowns.  This season was a make or break year for Cherilus and he showed vast improvement.  He had fewer penalties, cut down on assignment mistakes and played at a high level all season.

Cherilus injured his knee a couple weeks ago and Corey Hilliard replaced him.  Hilliard, who is on his fourth team in four years, had a great game last week shutting down Clay Matthews of the Packers.  Matthews had one sack, but it was a result of Drew Stanton retreating in the pocket when he should have stepped up.  Hilliard is expected to start the final three games of the 2010 season.
