Hanson On the Way Out in Detroit?

Could Jason Hanson be in another uniform in 2011? Dave Rayner had a solid 13 field goals kicking for Hanson when he was hurt, and as Bleacher Report points out today, Hanson could be out of a job once the 11 season starts with Rayner as the guy kicking for the Lions.

Obviously, one would think that Jason Hanson would stay with the Lions until his leg literally falls off, but he missed nearly half the season after only missing one game since 1992. Dave Raynor was picked up from free agency this year, kicking field goal after field goal in Jason Hanson’s stead.

In only eight games, Rayner made 13 of 16 field goals, including seven straight to end the season.

He drilled a 55-yarder to jump-start a short-handed offense in the season finale against Minnesota, made a game-tying 47-yarder in difficult conditions at Miami a day after Christmas and hit tying and winning kicks at the end of regulation and in overtime to help the Lions snap a 26-game road losing streak in a 23-20 win at Tampa Bay.

Tell me that doesn’t sound like a franchise kicker.

  1. Todd Tennis says:

It’s the cold hard reality of the NFL that sometimes players who helped define a franchise have to finish their career in a different uniform. While Jason Hansen may not rise to the iconic level of a Brett Favre or Jerry Rice, Dave Rayner may have played himself into a Lions roster spot in 2011.

I will be very sad to see Jason go, especially since he has been a bright spot in over a decade of awful Lions talent. He has also played with class and professionalism that is unparalleled. The fact is, though, that transitioning from a quality veteran to a solid young player is not easy to do in the NFL. Even if Dave Rayner is not the answer as the Lions placekicker of the future, the truth is that Hansen cannot hang on forever.
