Barry Sanders Father, William, Passes Away

On of the many fascinating things about Barry Sanders was the stark contrast between himself and his father.  Barry was quiet and reserved and his father was boisterous and brash.  William never shied away from an interview and always provided valuable sound clips, especially when he introduced his son a the Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction ceremony.

William introduced his son as “the third best running back ever,” behind Jim Brown and himself.  If William Sanders was the 2nd best runner ever, why didn’t he play a down in the NFL?  According to William he ran like Barry but his coaches didn’t like that style and made him pound it between the tackles.

Barry and his father didn’t always see eye to eye, as told in Barry’s autobiography, but he played a huge role in his son’s life.  Sadly, that role came to its end today as William Sanders passed away after a battle with lymphoma.

William Sanders was 74 and all of us at Lionsgab wish the Sanders family the best in this difficult time.
