The Lions will re-sign running back Kevin Smith, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports.
A 2008 third-round pick out of Central Florida by the Lions, Smith had 489 carries for 1,856 yards and 12 touchdowns with 91 receptions for 824 yards and a touchdown in 35 games, but was not offered a contract as a restricted free agent after the 2010 season.
Smith, 24, finished the 2010 season on injured reserve with a thumb injury and worked out for the Lions last Friday.
Smith previously worked out for the Miami Dolphins (9/13) and New York Giants (10/17), but was not offered contracts.
The Lions possess the NFL’s 27th-ranked run offense, to go along with the 28th-ranked run defense.
