Lions Ink Punter Robert Malone

The Lions have signed free agent punter Robert Malone, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Originally signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent out of Fresno State in 2010, Malone was waived before the preseason. Signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last October, Malone had a net average of 36.5 yards on 52 punts over the final 12 weeks of the regular season, placing 17 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

Malone had a 41.7-yard net average in three preseason games for the Buccaneers, but had no chance at a roster spot after Tampa Bay signed punter Michael Koenen to a six-year, $19.5 million contract in July.

Rookie punter Ryan Donahue injured his right quadriceps during Wednesday’s practice, prompting the Lions to bring in punters for workouts on Thursday. Malone, Matt Dodge and Glenn Pakulak were the three punters brought in.

Offensive tackle Jason Fox has been placed on injured reserve to make room for Malone on the 53-man roster.
