Stafford, Tulloch and Avril Left Off Pathetic Pro Bowl Roster

I know the Pro Bowl is a pathetic excuse for an All Star game and the selection of the roster has been a farce for years now, but every year when it’s announced I still get riled up at the sheer stupidity of it.  In the past, it didn’t really matter because there were next to no Lions worthy of a spot but this year’s  NFC roster is particularly galling.

To start, five Bears made the Pro Bowl.  FIVE.  Devin Hester was not one of them either.  Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs made it over Stephen Tulloch who according to Profootballfocus.com is the best middle linebacker in coverage in the league.  Briggs is 25th in the league in tackles, Urlacher is 38th and Tulloch is 16th in tackles and has more sacks and fumble recoveries than both of them combined.

Cliff Avril has 11 sacks, leads the league in forced fumbles and has two touchdown returns, but he is not on the Pro Bowl roster either.  Now Jared Allen, Jason Pierre-Paul and Jason Babin all have higher sack totals, but of the three only JPP has helped his team compete for a playoff berth.

Finally Matthew Stafford is missing from the roster, and he may potentially be the biggest omission.  Stafford is 6th in the league in quarterback rating, 3rd in touchdowns and 5th in yards.  He has led four three score deficit comebacks and more importantly has taken his team on his shoulders and carried them to the playoffs.

The Pro Bowl roster fluctuates with injuries and the eventual Super Bowl teams will withdraw their players as well, so the three deserving Lions could find their way onto the roster, but it is still ridiculous that three Arizona Cardinals and five Chicago Bears make the team while only Calvin Johnson represents a team that could finish with the 4th best record in the NFC.

  1. Dave Brown says:

Stafford has lead three 3 score deficit come backs, and four 13 or more.

  2. Tim says:

Doesn’t matter, no Lions will be able to play in the ProBowl anyways, they’ll have a better game to worry about.
