Lions Free Agency Update – Updated

Now that the big money has come close to drying up, the Lions will wade out into the free agent waters.  After a quiet couple of days (other than CJ’s extension) there are a number of rumors and reports of player visits.

Players the Lions are interested in:

  1. LaRon Landry S – Landry is a punishing tackler and a decent coverage safety, but injuries have derailed his last few seasons.  The Lions would like him to compete with Amari Spievey to start opposite Louis Delmas.  Landry has a visit scheduled with the Lions, as well as three other teams.
  2. Eric Winston RT – Winston was surprisingly cut by the Texans due to cap issues and a lingering injury issue (not serious.)  The former Texan is drawing a lot of interest as he was a member of the league’s best offensive line last season.  Winston would start immediately over Gosder Cherilus if signed.
  3. Tedd Ginn WR/KR – The Lions are looking to upgrade the KR position and get a player that can be used on offense as well.  Ginn is one of the best return men in the league and is a very good deep threat that would slide into the 4th receiver slot.
  4. David Hawthorne LB – Hawthorne is probably on the back burner for now since there is a real shot the Lions bring back Tulloch after Calvin’s deal freed up the cap space to do a long term deal.
  5. Jacob Lacey CB – Lacey was a periodic starter for the Colts for the last three seasons but doesn’t fit the new regime’s style.  He is young and has upside, but has bouts of inconsistency and injuries.  He would be added to the stable of young unproven but talented corners on the Lions’ roster.
  6. Marcus McNeil T – The former Charger Pro Bowler has an impressive resume if you leave out the last few injury plagued seasons.  He was a Pro Bowl franchise left tackle until a neck injury and two knee injuries robbed him of 12 starts over the last two seasons.  If he’s healthy he would be a huge steal.
  7. Geoff Schwartz G/T – Schwartz is another young promising player who has dealt with injuries recently.  He missed the 2011 season with a hip injury.  He is a versatile backup that could push for a starting position at a number of positions.
  8. Tim Shaw LB – Shaw is a special teamer and depth guy that played in Carolina.
  9. OJ Otogwe S – Playmaking safety wasn’t a good fit in Washington, signed for the money last season.  He’d come in and compete for a starters position.

Lions that are in the mix elsewhere:

  1. Eric Wright CB – Signed a 5 year deal with the Bucs
  2. Drew Stanton QB – Being heavily courted by the Jets to backup Mark Sanchez.  Will most likely sign with New York because Sanchez’s “extension” was merely smoke and mirrors, he’s on the hot seat.
  3. Shaun Hill QB – Hill visited the Rams but there has been no word on if talks are progressing.  Playing time vs. winning could be the determining factor for Hill.
  4. Leonard Davis G – Davis never made it on the field for the Lions last season, but he has visited the 49ers.

Players that have expressed interest in the Lions, but Lions may not feel the same:

  1. David Garrard QB – Garrard sat out last year because of a back injury, but he has expressed interest in signing with the Lions in a backup capacity.  Garrard is an experienced starter that had a similar style to Stanton.  If healthy, could be a good fit.
