Multiple media outlets have reported that Mikel Leshoure has been charged with possession of marijuana for the second time in a month. Prior to this report all the news regarding LeShoure was dealing with his ability to come back from a ruptured Achilles and how the Lions expect him to be healthy for training camp.
The Lions weren’t expected to treat the running back position as one of need with Jahvid Best and Leshoure expected to be back by training camp. The Lions are now faced with a definite need at running back with today’s news.
Leshoure has been busted twice in a month, which means he’s arrogant, stupid or has a problem. The other issue that arrises is he is now a repeat offender in the NFL’s substance abuse program with two strikes in the last 30 days. Depending on how many strikes Leshoure already had, he could be in line for a four game suspension or worst case a season long suspension if he’s had multiple strike prior to the most recent two.
Either way Leshoure is a risk to not be on the field due to injury and now on the brink of a possible suspension. With Kevin Smith and Jahvid Best’s injury history that leaves the Lions with their top three backs having injury concerns and one with a potential suspension.
The most concerning part of Leshoure’s situtation is that he just got in trouble a few weeks ago, if that wasn’t a wake up call for him there is no reason to expect he will keep his nose clean going forward. It is yet another blow to the wobbly Jenga tower that is the Lions’ backfield, and the Lions can’t afford to gamble that they can make it through the whole season without the tower crumbling again.
