Lions Take DE Devin Taylor with the 132nd Pick

The Lions continue to add talented players that need some strong coaching as they take 6′ 7″ 267 lb. DE Devin Taylor in the 4th round.  Taylor has a great frame as he has great length and room to add some weight.  Despite his height, he is a very quick twitch athlete with excellent burst.  His long arms help him hold the point of attack and bat passes down.

On the flip side, tall defensive ends struggle with stayling low and maintaining leverage, but the Wide 9 alignment will help him with that.  He will be coming quickly at a sharp angle at the quarterback which forces the tackle to have to slide out quickly.  It’s difficult for a tackle to slide out there and get lower than the oncoming rusher.  Taylor is almost the opposite of Ziggy Ansah in the way of experience and instincts.  Despite playing football for years, Taylor doesn’t have great instincts and needs to work more on recognizing plays.  Ansah is short on experience, but very instinctive.

Taylor will help as a rotational end while he develops over the next couple season.  He will be working with some very good coaches and should be able to help out as a situational pass rusher in the meantime.
