The Lions drafted P Sam Martin at the end of the 5th round and while many fans will question this pick, I think it was an important pick. Martin has a big leg and is versatile special teamer. He is a very capable punter and excels at kickoffs. While Jason Hanson was extremely accurate, he didn’t put much distance on his kickoffs. The Lions also have not had a punter that can boom kicks for over a decade. The other trait that makes this an important pick is he can place the football where he wants it.
Several of the long punt returns the Lions have given up over the last few seasons came because the punt was mishit and went away from the coverage. The Lions also had a handful of games heavily impacted by a botched punt last season that gave opponents great field position at inopportune times.
Martin will be the favorite to punt and handle kickoffs despite the addition of Blake Clingan.
