Report: Lions Closing On A Deal With Jim Caldwell

After leaking rumors on Monday that the Detroit Lions did not get their front-runner in the head coaching search in Ken Whisenhunt, the Lions are reportedly in negotiations with another coach. Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell is expected to be the new head coach of the Lions.

When Whisenhunt agreed to terms with the Tennessee Titans, the Lions had to move on quickly. According to the report, former head coach Tony Dungy called the Lions to endorse Caldwell. Caldwell spent much time with Dungy with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Indianapolis Colts.

Caldwell has held one head coaching job to this point. His three year span with the Colts ended when they finished the 2011 season 2-14. In Caldwell’s first season, he led the Colts to the playoffs but fell short to the New Orleans Saints.

In 2012, Caldweel was hired to be the Ravens’ quarterback coach but was promoted to offensive coordinator when the team fired Cam Cameron. Caldwell and the offense led the organization to a Super Bowl title.

After the 2013 season, Caldwell has interviewed for multiple head coaching jobs. According to sources, Caldwell has been a leading candidate for the Lions.
