Lions Draft TE Eric Ebron with the 10th Pick

The Lions really wanted to add a play maker to take pressure off of Calvin Johnson.  Most believed that player would be a receiver, but with Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans long gone, the Lions take the highest rated TE on the board, Eric Ebron.  TE is a bit of a misnomer, as Ebron is so much more than a TE.  Ebron is a Jimmy Graham style TE, meaning he can line up inline as well as in the slot.

Ebron is a freakish athlete at 6’4″ and 250 lbs but runs a 4.6 40 yard dash.  He has soft natural hands and a 32″ vertical jump.  He has the size to overpower safeties and the speed to outrun linebackers.  The Lions will use a lot of two tight end formations with Brandon Pettigrew lining up inline and Ebron either inline or in the slot with Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate outside.  Throw in Reggie Bush and Joique Bell out of the backfield and you have match up nightmares for defenses.

Matthew Stafford now has a sold offensive line, a two-headed running game and a bevy of receiving weapons.  The Lions will still likely add a receiver and at least another pick on the offensive line.  The linebackers and safeties are the players I’d keep an eye on for the second round pick so far.

You can totally see where the Lions are headed with their offensive playmakers – some pretty good talent; now it’s just a matter of bringing it all together.

Personally I wouldn’t question taking the best offensive talent on “the board” at no.10 no matter what the other circumstances are, but considering how happy I am to have Lombardi and NOT Linehan, I see nothing wrong with giving our OC the player he wants in the 1st round.
Also I’m impressed that the staff didn’t succumb to the “worst pass defense eva”, “need to draft 3 top 10 DBs” hysteria that has infected the fan base and pundits alike. Maybe Caldwell read the “Lions Gab” article.
