Joique Bell Turned Down Pay Cut to Stay with Lions

Joique Bell

The Lions provided Joique Bell an opportunity to stay with the team, presumably at a reduced salary but hwe wasn’t interested, Justin Rogers of Mlive reports.

“The NFL is a crazy business,” Bell told reporters Saturday night. “You never know. The Lions made me an offer. I thought I did what was best for my career. I ended up declining the offer.”

The Lions released the popular running back earlier this week, ending a four-plus season stint with the organization. Cutting the Benton Harbor native and Wayne State alum saved the team $2.5 million in cap space for 2016.

Bell declined to elaborate on how much interest he’s received from other teams since his release, but sounded eager to test his value on the open market.

He also didn’t rule out a return to Detroit.

“There’s no bad blood between me and the Lions,” Bell said. “They did what was best for the organization and I did what I thought was best for my family. You never know, I might end up back with the Lions, but I owe it to my family, I owe it to myself, I owe it to my hard work and dedication to test the market, so that’s what I’m doing.”
