Calvin Johnson

It’s official, as today Lions wide out Calvin Johnson announced his retirement from the NFL after nine seasons.

Johnson filed his retirement papers with the NFL, one day in advance of the new league year. The Lions also announced, with respect to Johnson’s contract, that those “matters were settled to the satisfaction of the parties.”

The wide out goes out on top, as he holds almost every significant franchise record. Overall he has 15 NFL records, including the most receiving yards in a season with 1,964 in 2012.

Johnson was set to count $24 million against the cap in 2016. The Lions will save at least $11.1 million in cap space with Johnson’s retirement and as of now.

That’s a huge loss for the Lions, and the NFL, to have Calvin retire. What an excellent WR he was for so many years.
