Lions Draft A’Shawn Robinson with 46th Pick

The second round began with a huge run on defensive linemen and the Lions joined in that run.  After a series of edge rushers and tackles were picked, the DT stable was thinning very rapidly.  The Lions pounced on A’Shawn Robinson with the 46th pick.

Robinson was the lesser talked about of the two Alabama defensive tackles, but has the higher upside.  He is a very strong and athletic man for his size and has a non-stop motor.  He has great length and strong hands that he uses to stack and shed and he locates the ball well.  He makes tons of hustle plays as he is capable of navigating through bodies and making plays from sideline to sideline.

He lacks refinement as a pass rusher because he wasn’t asked to do much of it at Alabama.  He has the tools and awareness to learn to become more versatile with his technique.  He also has excellent flexibility to stay low out of his stance, great balance when on the move and he has explosive leg drive.  He does have to hit the film to understand combination blocks and get a better feel for what the offensive line is trying to do, but that is coachable.

Robinson is a bit of a projection as his role in college doesn’t exactly fit his role in the pros.  That adds an element of risk to the pick, but worst case scenario he should be a solid two down lineman that helps defend the run.
