New Lions Coach Matt Patricia Says He’s Excited to Work with QB Matthew Stafford

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford turned 30 on Wednesday. But Matt Patricia got a jump on the birthday boy by offering him best wishes on the final days of his 20s, Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press reports.

“Yeah, you know, I spoke to him last night,” Patricia said as he was introduced as the Lions’ 27th head coach. “I wished him a happy birthday. Today’s his birthday.”

Patricia wouldn’t say whether having an established quarterback like Stafford was a key part of his decision to come to Detroit. But he was effusive in his praise of his new signal-caller.

“He’s great,” Patricia said. “Obviously, I’ve had the opportunity to play to against him a couple times and see him on film and study him, so I know what a tremendous quarterback he is, what a competitor and someone that just is a true professional at what he does.

“So, we had a great conversation last night. It was very much so ‘How’s everything going?’ I’m excited, you know, just to get him a chance to get to know who I am and speak to me on the phone. I look forward to meeting all of our players, though, to be honest with you. I’m really excited to kind of get to know all of them and, you know, start to build that team attitude.”
