Lions Sign All But Top Two Picks

The Lions agreed to terms with six of their eight unsigned draft picks on the eve of training camp. The only remaining unsigned players are Detroit’s top two picks, tackle Gosder Cherilus and linebacker Jordon Dizon. Team president Matt Millen said he’s in range with Cherilus and Dizon and doesn’t expect negotiations to take much longer. The Lions report to training camp today and hold their first practice Thursday morning.

Lions Still Working To Sign Draft Picks

The Lions are due to report to training camp tomorrow and team officials are still working to sign eight of their picks from the draft. Only defensive end Cliff Avril, who was selected in the third round, has agreed to a deal with Detroit. Lions chief operating officer Tom Lewand said he is confident the eight remaining players will be signed quickly. Negotiations are expected to intensify today.

Lions Confirm Contact With Culpepper, Spikes

A couple of veteran NFL free agents are are inquiring about jobs in Detroit. The Lions confirm they recently were visited by linebacker Takeo Spikes and have been contacted by quarterback Daunte Culpepper. Spikes is a ten year veteran who was released by the Eagles in March. Culpepper was not resigned by Oakland after one season with the Raiders. The Lions report to training camp on Wednesday with the first practice set for Thursday morning.

NFL Investigating Possible Gang Gestures

The NFL is reportedly investigating a different style of hand signals possibly being used on the field. The “Los Angeles Times” reports the league has hired experts to see if players are flashing gang signs during on-field celebrations. The NFL is enlisting the help of local and national authorities to learn more about gang culture, and according to the paper, the experts are watching game tapes to see if they can identify the gestures. The league’s vice president of security, Milt Ahlerich, told the paper that any player seen flashing gang signals will be dealt with harshly, and commissioner Roger Goodell will not tolerate any gang-related gestures on the field. The investigation comes after Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce was fined 25-thousand dollars by the NBA for making “menacing gestures” as he walked toward the Atlanta Hawks’ bench during the first round of the NBA playoffs in April.

Training Camp Open Again to the Public

The Lions will open training camp to the public at their headquarters in Allen Park for a second-straight year. The general public is invited to attend Lions training camp July 29, August 1 and August 4-5. Access will be limited to the first 700 fans on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Lions Reportedly Interested In Bucs’ Simms

The Lions are reportedly interested in acquiring quarterback Chris Simms from Tampa Bay. Other teams are interested in Simms as well, including the Cowboys and Bears. After losing the starting job with a life threatening spleen injury in 2006, Simms sat out all of last year and is fifth on the Bucs’ depth chart.

Lions May Just Wait on Jordan Till Raiders Release Him

While we talked a few days ago about the Lions interest in Raiders RB LaMont Jordan, it looks as if the team may simply wait for the Raiders to release him than rather give up a draft choice for him. Pro Football Weekly is reporting that the Lions won’t give Oakland more than a 7th round pick for Jordan, and could probably sit back to wait for Oakland to cut ties with him all together. Jordan is due to make $4.7 mil in 2008, so you can bet they will make that amount smaller if he wants to play in Motown.

Lions Talking with Raiders About RB Jordan

The Raiders are stocked at running back already with rookie Darren McFadden, Michael Bush and the returning Justin Fargas. That means the odd man out will be former Jets back LaMont Jordan, who the team is actively seeking to deal. ESPN’s Hashmarks says that a deal may come down between the Raiders and Detroit Lions, a team that Jordan recently visited according to agent Alvin Keels.

The site says that it was a pre-trade visit arranged by the Raiders and Lions, and that it could set up a deal that would send Jordan to Detroit for a sixth or seventh-round draft choice back to the Raiders. Jordan will join his third team, as he started hie career with the Jets, then went to the Raiders back in 2005. Last season in 12 games he ran for 549 yards on 144 carries with three TD’s.

The writing about Jordan was on the wall when the team used the 4th pick in the draft on McFadden. The Lions need help at running back, and even went so far to attend the workout of a player they released not that long ago - Kevin Jones. Jordan will be 31 in November, so the Lions probably feel he has some gas left in the tank.
