A Preview and Pick of the Lions at Niners

The 49’ers last week were able to win a wild overtime game with the Seahawks on the road, and this week will try and make it two in a row as they host the Lions at Monster Park. It will be an interesting game for two members of the 49’ers – QB J.T. O’Sullivan and offensive coordinator Mike Martz. They both will be facing the Lions with a bit of revenge maybe on their minds.

For the second straight week, the Lions allowed their opposition to run out to a 21-0 lead before they made a game of it, only to then lose it late. They actually led vs the Packers at home last week before the Pack recovered, and then blew out Detroit in the end to send them to 0-2. If you go by the numbers, things don’t look good for the Lions, as they have lost 10 of 11 in the series since 1988.

The question will be can O’Sullivan and the Niners keep the momentum and offense going this week. They should, as they showed vs the Hawks they can get the ball down the field with throws, and then turn to Frank Gore to rush the football if they have some issues throwing. Gore ran for 159 yards against the Lions in their last meeting back on November 12th, 2006.

Detroit simply has to get off to a better start. They can’t let the Niners build early momentum and run away with this game, because when it comes to talent, the Lions have it, they just are not putting it to good use. Look for them to use a lot of Roy Williams, and also for them to try and run Kevin Smith vs a Niners run defense that can give up yards on the ground if you test them enough.

While the emotion will be on the side of San Fran, Detroit can make this a game if they start fast themselves. Look for San Fran to win, but it won’t be easy as Jon Kitna and the Lions make it a fairly entertaining game out in San Francisco.
