Lions Lay Down in Dallas

The Lions have continuously teased how close they are all season, but after the Debacle in Dallas the close games might be over.  The Lions were plagued by penalties and missed opportunities and for the first time all season they appeared to quit.

The Lions dominated the first half holding the Cowboys under 100 yards of offense and looking much better than their 10-7 lead indicated.  The ground game was moving, Shaun Hill was 18-22 and the defense rebounded after allowing Dallas to drive 98 yards on their first possession.

The Lions kept rolling out of the gate in the second half when Ndamukong Suh forced a safety when he was held in the end zone..  The Cowboys kicked to the Lions and just as it appeared the Lions pinned the Cowboys inside the five yard line, the tide turned on a fluke punt return for a touchdown followed by a quick turnover by Jerome Felton.

The Lions fought back with a quick touchdown drive but then the Lions melted down for good.  The Lions defense made stupid play after stupid play and finally gave up.  The Cowboys got out of a number of long yardage situations on simple draw and screen passes that should have been expected.  When the Lions did expect them, they tackled terribly and allowed a ton of yards after contact.

The Lions just play stupid, they look unprepared in key situations, they make rookie mistakes and they continued to commit stupid penalties.  The defense could have taken control of the game in the second half after the Lions fought back, but they had poor tackling fundamentals and appeared to resign themselves to the fact that they were going to lose.

I am a huge Jum Schwartz fan, but this team is mentally checking out and their stupid mistakes have cost them dozens of opportunities to win games.  Talent isn’t the main issue anymore, this team needs to play smarter and learn from their mistakes, otherwise they are destined to pick in the top five again.
