You Stay Classy Detroit!

For an organization that has been labelled dysfunctional, dirty, criminal harboring etc. the Lions once again showed what a classy organization they really are.

The Lions have always been ahead of the curve when it came to social issues such as minority hiring and community outreach programs, but years of losing and the recent bad boy image has tarnished that reputation.  However, the Lions should be commended for their recent handling of Jahvid Best.

The Lions have been orchestrating a charade regarding Best’s return to the field this season, constantly making public statements expecting him to be cleared to return to the field.  Despite the public show of confidence, the Lions knew as an organization that Best was not going to return to the field this year and potentially ever for a while now.  So why the charade?

While some organizations (including the Lions) throw out misinformation for a competitive advantage, the Lions had a more wholesome motive.  NFL players qualify for pension coverage after three years in the league, Jahvid Best is in his third year.

The Lions kept up the charade to allow Best to accrue a third season so he will qualify for his pension and healthcare as he faces a very likely premature retirement.  In this day and age of corporate greed where thousands are laid off to preserve bonuses for executives, it is refreshing to see an organization do what is best (no pun intended) for an employee rather than take the opportunity to line their own pockets.

For this, I say well done Lions, well done.
