Calvin Johnson Dealing with Nerve Damage

Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson said he has been fighting nerve damage side effects since playing against the Minnesota Vikings on September 30. Minnesota rocked Johnson with several hard hits in that game, which led to the receiver’s concussion, Anwar Richardson of

“Actually, I had some nerve damage, so that was kind of messing up my grip a little bit,” Johnson said. “Not to blame it on that, but I think that a concussion maybe could have had something to do with some of that damage I had going on.”

When asked if he was still dealing with nerve damage problems, Johnson said, “It’s a long season. Leave it at that.”

Johnson was the victim of a brutal helmet-to-helmet collision with Minnesota Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway during that game. Greenway was fined $21,000 by the NFL for his hit.

In addition, Vikings safety Harrison Smith also rocked Johnson with a punishing hit during that game.

As a result, Johnson has been feeling a shooting pain in his arm since that game, which has affected his ability to hold a football.

“Taking those hits, they’re real violent,” Johnson said. “They definitely have a lot of lingering impact on whether it be your neck, your head in Jahvid’s (Best) case. It can do a lot of stuff.”
