Preparing for Round 2

The Lions addressed their most glaring need in the first round, but they have a lot more work to do on the roster.  The top areas of need on the roster are defensive end, safety and defensive tackle.  In my opinion, the pick in the second round needs to be the most explosive, highest upside player in one of those position groups.

The top two players in my opinion are DE Emmanuel Ogbah and DT Chris Jones.  I also like S Justin Simmons if the other two are not available.

Ogbah has elite athleticism and the major concerns with his game is technique and understanding the game.  Those are the same questions that Ziggy Ansah had and he overcame them to become one of the best in the league.  Who better to mentor Ogbah?

Chris Jones is an elite athlete and physical specimen whose physical skills scream top 10 prospect.  He has some unevenness in his game, but with an excellent defensive line coach, the Lions can easily maximize his talent.

Simmons is a versatile safety that can play deep, in the box, in the slot and blitz off the edge.  He could be a nickel defender early while he is groomed to take over a starting spot in 2017, similar to what the Lions did with Isa Abdul-Quddus.

I still would prefer the Lions pass on a run stuffing DT in the 2nd round if there are explosive players on the board.  I’m not certain if there are any CBs that will be great fits in the second round.  The Lions lack players with ball skills at the corner position.  If they are going to add a player in the draft at that position, he needs to be a ball hawk.  Also keep an eye on C/G Nick Martin, whose brother Zack is an All-Pro and Pro Bowler for the Dallas Cowboys.
